Offshore wind foundations

Long-life corrosion protection for monopiles, jackets and transition pieces in splash zone and atmospheric exposure.

CorrosivityISO 12944 C5-M to CX
Typical service life20–25+ years

Offshore wind structures combine three of the hardest conditions a coating system can face: permanent salt-laden atmosphere, mechanical load and flexing, and an inspection window that may only open once every few years. A coating failure is not a maintenance item — it is a vessel campaign.

The system therefore has to be specified for a defined target life, not for a colour and a thickness. That means a zinc-based primer for cathodic protection, an MIO or high-build epoxy intermediate for barrier and UV performance, and a topcoat chosen for colour retention and low surface energy in a marine atmosphere.

Recommended coating system

LayerType & DFTProduct examples
PrimerZinc-rich epoxy, 60–80 µm DFTZinc-rich epoxy primers
IntermediateHigh-build MIO epoxy, 120–160 µm DFTMIO epoxy / high-build epoxy
TopcoatPolyurethane or polysiloxane, 60–80 µm DFTAliphatic PU / polysiloxane
Total240–320 µm DFT for C5-M; higher for splash zoneAccording to ISO 12944-5

Application critical points

  • The splash zone is not an atmospheric exposure — it needs its own, thicker specification and often a glass-flake or elastomeric solution rather than a standard atmospheric system.
  • Edges, cut-outs and welds must be stripe coated before each full coat. On offshore structures, edge corrosion is the most common visible failure.
  • Plan the surface preparation grade and the maximum exposure time together with the fabrication schedule; a primer that times out in storage is a common and expensive problem.
  • Where a low-friction or low-drag topcoat is required, confirm compatibility with the intermediate coat at the specification stage, not in the yard.
