A storage tank is two different coating problems. The external shell faces atmospheric corrosion and UV; the internal surface faces the stored product, which may be hydrocarbons, process water, or a corrosive intermediate. The product, the operating temperature and any cleaning regime determine the internal lining, and none of these can be assumed.

Petrochemical storage tanks
Internal and external protection for carbon steel tanks holding crude, refined products and process water.
CorrosivityC5-I / immersion, chemically aggressive
Typical service life10–20 years by product
Recommended coating system
| Layer | Type & DFT | Product examples |
|---|---|---|
| External primer | Zinc-rich epoxy or zinc silicate, 60–80 µm | Zinc-based primer |
| External topcoat | Polyurethane or epoxy, 60–120 µm | PU / epoxy topcoat |
| Internal lining | Pure or novolac epoxy, 2 coats, 300–400 µm | Tank lining epoxy |
| Special cases | Glass-flake or vinyl ester for aggressive media | Glass-flake lining |
Application critical points
- Confirm the internal lining against the actual stored product and operating temperature — a lining approved for one medium is not automatically suitable for another.
- Tank bottom plates and the first shell ring are the highest-risk areas; specify and inspect them separately from the shell.
- For tanks that will be entered, ensure the coating is compatible with the confined-space entry and ventilation plan, and allow full cure before filling.
